Hot Cross Buns

This was one of Mom's favorite recipes...Wendy

Night before: soften one package of yeast in 2 cups of scalded milk, cooled to lukewarm - add enough flour to make a stiff batter. Let rise all night in a cool place.

In the morning add:   1/4 cup shortening
                                1 egg

                                1/2 tsp salt

                               1/4 tsp soda

                               1/2 cup sugar

                               1/2 tsp nutmeg

Kneed until stiff enough to roll out.

Let rise until double in bulk. Form into buns. Cut with a sharp knife to form a cross. Let rise. When ready for the oven coat with a mixture of sugar and milk.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
